What is Somatic Healing?

Somatic healing combines the techniques used in Somatic Experiencing® with the healing modality of Breathwork to facilitate healing in the mind and and body.

 

During each session I will evaluate what somatic intervention is most applicable for my clients.

Somatic means "of or relating to the body as distinct from the mind" and comes from the Greek root "soma" (Body)"

Somatic Experiencing® is a body-oriented approach to healing trauma. This approach is based on a deep understanding of nervous system physiology and is a potent psychobiological approach to resolving the symptoms of trauma and chronic stress. 

​

Breathwork uses the breath to activate the subconscious mind and bring awareness to the mental, physical, and emotional blocks in the body. Breathwork will help you release stress and tension, heal and resolve trauma, and help you gain deeper insights into your life.

 

Our bodies like our brains hold memories, they hold the emotional memories of our lives, and these experiences become imprinted in our cells. Every time we experience traumas, they imprint on our muscles and our nervous system. Using the breath as a tool to unlock the body, Breathwork will help you to release suppressed emotions, limiting beliefs, past traumas, and addictions and bring more awareness and vitality into your life.

 

Through gentle guidance, I am able to assist you in arriving at the root of the blockages in your mind and body. Together we will tend to the spaces in your body that are calling for your attention and teach you how to live in your truth, breath fully, connect with yourself, and heal your body.

What should I expect from my first session?

The first session will include a thorough interview where we explore and discuss your current life situations as well as what you know about your birth, childhood, and family patterns. This will help you bring awareness to the deeper layers of tension, suppressed emotions, belief systems, anxiety, and stress you are holding in your body.

Throughout your share I will slow you down and support you through the variety of feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations that may arise throughout the session. This may be in the form of a memory, a feeling, a clear insight, or in the form of a bodily sensation – tingling/pricking, tension, heat, cold, movement, and pins and needles are all common symptoms.

 

Your session will be completed with a sharing of your experience and insights from the session. I often offer my clients relevant suggestions and homework based on their session to help them integrate their session back into their everyday life.

Each session is tailored just for you and is focused on breathwork, counseling, somatic exploration, and healing touch. We will begin each session with a sharing of what has been going on in your life to determine the focus of the session.

What is happening to your body during a session?

We will be working with the sympathetic, parasympathetic nervous system, autonomic nervous system. This creates a space for you to weave between activation and regulation to facilitate deep healing in the mind, body, and soul.

 

Breathwork hypo-oxygenates the cells causing your blood stream to be flooded with more oxygen than you normally take in at a very rapid rate, this results in an increased sensitivity within in the body which can cause physical sensations, such as shivering or tension, change in body temperature, memories and emotions to arise. 

Can you teach me to breath correctly?

Yes and no. Somatic healing will facilitate easier breathing by acknowledging what you are you holding inside your body, and facilitating a space for you to release anything that is weighing on you and interfering with your breathing. Some of us go our whole life without taking a deep breath. As you understand and release your emotional blockages with in your body you will breathe with more ease.
